's remember the chuck hagel nomination is another way for the president to signal what he wants with afghanistan withdrawal, which is to get out sooner rather than later. president obama went -- when it comes to the cabinet shuffle, while monday and chuck hagel was about getting a tough confirmation fight and having a tough confirmation fight in the upcoming days, he went for more of a sure thing thursday. he called on his chief of staff, jack lew, to fill the slot at treasury, being vacanted by secretary geithner. lew has gone before the full senate for confirmation more than once in the past four years. he hasn't gotten a no vote yet. and the president doesn't expect one now. >> jack has my complete trust. i know i'm not alone in that. in the words of one former senator, "having lew on your team is the equivalent as a coach the luxury of having somebody in almost any position and knowing he will do well." and i could not agree more. so i hope the senate will confirm him as quickly as possible. >> one thing lew may have to work on, though, if he gets the job, his signature. yes

former senator chuck hagel, richard. i've covered him for many years. he was skeptical about the wars in iraq and afghanistan for that matter and if he's confirmed as the next defense secretary, where do you think he personally will come down on keeping a military presence in afghanistan? >> he and i have talked about afghanistan. we've not talked about that particular issue. my hunch is he would be comfortable as are most people in the national security realm, although i won't speak for him, about keeping a residual force. the cost would be relatively small, it would allow to you do some continued training and advising. it would allow to you do limited counterterrorism. it avoids looking like you're pulling out the rug. so in some way it is protects the united states somewhat from the argument that we've quote/unquote abandoned afghanistan although after a decade it's hard to argue that we would be doing so. so the only danger it seems to me is if you have small forces, they often can accomplish a lot and are they there to baby-sit, to use a terrible phrase, a country that's unraveli

unhappiness when i read about chuck hagel's remarks from 14 years ago, which i didn't remember, but now the question is he's a man who is going to help us withdraw from afghanistan and reduce the military. i'm very encouraged by that. my one criticism of the president was he wasn't going far enough in reducing the military. i think people now understand that it's either keeping troops in nato or cutting medicare, and i think the american people are on the side of medicare. >> if hagel gets confirmed, do you think you could help him do the job of reforming at the pentagon and saving some money? >> yes, i think -- well, in the first few months -- i won't be there long enough even if i get it. but the job there is to run interference for him. by the way, some basic politics, you understand, chris, cutting existing weapons systems with all the web of contracts out there can be hard, but what you can do is not start new ones. it's easier to block projects that shouldn't be done going forward than to start them, and i certainly will be there. i hope he's going to continue to support the notio

want to commend president obama and his decision to nominate chuck hagel to be the next secretary of defense. i have known chuck for a long time. i think he is the right person to lead the department at this time. not only because he is a decorated yet mom combat veteran, but he understands washington and understands the issues that confront our national defense. despite a lot of very severe budget pressures which i will speak to in a moment's, we need to maintain, and i believe he believes we need to maintain the world's most powerful and ready force to deal with the security challenges that we are going to confront in the 21st century. this is a critical moment for this department. and for our national defense. i believe that we have put in place a new defense strategy for the 21st century that we believe can meet our fiscal responsibilities to the country. that can confront any threat to our national interests, and i can maintain the strongest military power in the world to protect the american people. we face, as you know, a number of adversaries around the world's,, but the m

think especially for chuck hagel as secretary of defense. interestingly enough, he was a former republican senator, and i think he thought he'd get bipartisan support. hagel didn't make a lot of friends among republicans because he was well to the left of them on a lot of foreign policy issues. opposed the troop surge in iraq, and opposed get tough measures against iran. a lot of leading republican senators don't like him. and some top democrats who are at least on the fence about him, because he took -- he made a statement about gays that they didn't like several years back. and also he has not been an unquestioned supporter for israel. i think hagel has the toughest road to go. we'll be talking to two key senators about that and the fight over gun control, which is starting to pick up in the capital. kelly ayotte, rising republican star, and senator from connecticut, blumenthal. >> looks like john kerry is the one that might sail through easier than the other two? >> i think kerry will have no problem at all. look, everything has things in their record people are going to pick
